Gloria Estefan: 90 Millas

From Joyride Media | 59:00

New one-hour radio special dedicated to Cuba's musical diaspora, and its rich heritage that continues through its most prominent exiled artists.

Default-piece-image-1 GLORIA ESTEFAN: 90 MILLAS Hosted by Bernadette Peters New one-hour radio special dedicated to Cuba's musical diaspora, and its rich heritage that continues through its most prominent exiled artists. Gloria Estefan, Cachao, Paquito D'Rivera and other Cuban-born musicians comment on the music from their homeland, and their collaborations on these songs recorded for Estefan's new album, 90 Millas. "90 Millas, which means 90 miles, is the distance between the most southernmost point of the United States in Key West and Cuba. For us Cubans, 90 miles is very representative of not just a distance in miles, but a distancing of intellectual, emotional, spiritual proportions, because it?s really?it doesn?t matter what the distance is, we?re separated from our homeland. So, for us it was kind of like saying, okay this is a distance but nothing can separate us from out cultural and musical heritage. It?s still very much alive in us." - Gloria Estefan. As Cuban people spread across the world, so did the their music and culture. That history remains alive wherever Cubans landed, especially in New York, Miami, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Most importantly, these musicians passed these traditions to the new collaborators they found in their new homes. Their rich traditions reached new audiences as it mixed other genres or evolved into new ones - such as Salsa or Gloria Estefan's Cuban-styled pop Estefan worked with many of the artists responsible for this progress to create the new arrangements of Cuban classics featured on 90 Millias. Candido Camero, Israel "Cachao" Lopez, Generoso Jimenez, Paquito D'Rivera, Sal Cuevas, Paquito Hechevarria and Nelson Gonzalez join Estefan to discuss the history, present and future of their musical roots.

Santanamulti_small SANTANA: MULTI-DIMENSIONAL WARRIOR In this brand-new one-hour radio special, Carlos Santana explores his extensive catalog to highlight tracks that reflect his deep spirituality. Living, playing music and being a force for change are all parts of the same idea that has inspired Santana for 40 years. In an exclusive interview, Santana discusses how this relates to what he considers the most spiritual works from his catalog.

We'll also hear from two generations of guitar greats - John McLaughlin and Derek Trucks, legendary bassist Larry Graham, and percussionist Orestes Vilato. Santana's musical highlights in the "Multi-Dimensional Warrior" special include some of his best known instrumentals ("Samba Pa Ti," "Luz Amor di Vida" and others), a brand-new mix "Spirit" featuring guitar solos recorded last year, and a few other of Carlos' personal favorite album cuts.

The program also features rare music your listeners won't hear anywhere else. Live tracks from a May 2008 show at The Fillmore in San Francisco were taped forty years after he first headlined that storied venue, and his first show there in many years.

Studio Rio Presents The Brazil Connection

What would it sound like if some of the classics of American music were recorded in Rio De Janeiro?

Screen_shot_2014-05-30_at_4 Brazilian music has always been inclusive, and German producers Frank and Christian Berman have raised that idea to a new level.  They took only the vocal performances from classic American songs and invited an all-star list of Brazilian musicians to create new arrangements and play along.

Screen_shot_2012-07-19_at_12

When Sixto Rodriguez emerged from Detroit in the early 70’s, he made two albums that didn’t catch the ears of the public in the United States.  But in South Africa, Rodriguez became a household name – up there with Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley.  South Africans didn’t know much about his life, but it was as accepted rumor that he had committed suicide.  25 years later, a couple of fans decided to search for information, and they discovered their hero alive and well – doing manual labor and completely unaware of his impact and success half a world away.

In this one hour radio special, you’ll hear from the producers of his records, the people who found him and the director of a documentary about how it all happened, and from Rodriguez himself.

Waylon Jennings: Nashville Rebel

From Joyride Media | 59:05

One-hour music intensive radio special pays tribute to American music icon Waylon Jennings.

Legend_small Waylon Jennings became a country star doing it Nashville's way. But he became a legend doing things his way. In the early 1970s, his and fellow Texan Willie Nelson's successful fight for creative control of their records launched country?s Outlaw movement. From a career that began in 1958 with a single produced by rock icon Buddy Holly until his death in 2002, Waylon created edgy, timeless, straight-talking music like "This Time," "Luckenbach, Texas (Back To The Basics Of Love)" and "Good Hearted Woman" (with Willie). WAYLON JENNINGS: NASHVILLE REBEL looks back on Waylon's whole career - from the first Holly-produced single (Jole Blon), a tune from his early ?60s days in Phoenix (Stop the World), his early RCA hits, all the Outlaw masterpieces, and "I Do Believe" as part of the Highhwaymen. Host Cowboy Jack Clement tells the story with help from Waylon's wife Jessi Colter, musicians and collaborators Kris Kristofferson, and Richie Albright, and writers Lenny Kaye and Anthony DeCurtis. "He took his name to heart, and then made music from its foursquare beat, and listened to what his inner sense of the music was telling him, and chewed on his songs, because that's what he liked to do best, and let them live out his life, more than one chorus at a time." - Lenny Kaye

Johnny Cash: Personal File

From Joyride Media | 59:05

One-hour music intensive documentary hosted by Rodney Crowell explores Johnny Cash?s ?Personal File? home recording archive.

Cashredhead_small New radio special from the people behind the award-winning four-part series, "Johnny Cash: The Legend." Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Johnny Cash sat down with an acoustic guitar at home and recorded tape after tape of songs that he loved, both old and new. When he finished, the tape would be marked ?Personal File? and put in a vault that has just recently been re-opened. Throughout this one-hour program, Cash is heard having fun and telling stories of his childhood and deep faith on these solo acoustic recordings. The sparse and loose arrangements of original songs and covers from the "Personal File" tapes also served as the template for Cash's acclaimed American Recordings albums produced by Rick Rubin between 1994 and his death in 2003. Comments about these recordings and Cash?s love of music come from his son, John Carter Cash, daughter Roseanne Cash, Marty Stuart, Cowboy Jack Clement, journalist Anthony DeCurtis and biographer Patrick Carr.

Rosanne Cash: The List

From Joyride Media | 59:00

In this one-hour special, Rosanne, producer John Leventhal, singer/songwriter Laura Cantrell and Rolling Stone magazine's Anthony DeCurtis delve into the history and writers of these songs, offering a new perspective on some of the milestones of American Music.

Elvis: Viva Las Vegas

From Joyride Media | Part of the I Am An Elvis Fan series | 59:00

After 8 years away from live performance, Elvis Presley made up for lost time.

Elvisvegas_small Much of Elvis' early success stemmed from his electrifying live performances on stages around the world. That all changed with the movie deals, and the filming and recording schedules that left no time for concerts. Eventually, he grew unhappy with the movies, and returned to the stage in a big way - the legendary 1968 Comeback TV Special. As only Elvis can do, he then followed that up with something even bigger - Las Vegas. His string of sold out shows at the International and Hilton Hotels revolutionized the concert business at Vegas casinos, leading to the spectacles that are common today. These events were both large and intimate, and allowed Elvis to explore a unique, emotional repertoire of songs from many genres. Unfortunately, this creative moment was offset by his demons that were certainly not helped by Vegas' 24-hour casino culture. In addition to those also interviewed for The Early Years, Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers and Presley's backup singer, Cissy Houston, also add insightful comments about Elvis' Las Vegas years.

The Byrds (part 1): There is a Season

From Joyride Media | Part of the The Byrds: There is a Season / Farther Along series | 59:05

The first of two one-hour documentaries on The Byrds, covering 1964 to 1967: the hitmaking years of the band's original five members.

Tambourine_small The first of two one-hour documentaries on The Byrds, the continuously groundbreaking band who bridged the gaps between The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, the Beach Boys, the Los Angeles psychedelic underground and classic country. Their memorable music set the stage for everyone from the Eagles to Tom Petty to R.E.M. Each hour is hosted by singer-songwriter Laura Cantrell, and covers a distinct period of their prolific history that can either be aired as one two-part series, or as your choice of two insightful one-hour programs.

THERE IS A SEASON covers 1964-1967, the all-too-brief hitmaking years of the Byrds' original five members - Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke. They were an electrified folk band who topped the charts with some of the decades' most innovative singles and albums. By 1967, their musical harmony was engulfed by the off-stage disharmony that pushed them to reach those heights. Instead of being directed by the singular vision of one leader, The Byrds were consistently led by everybody's contributions - from their original five members to the musicians involved with their later years.

Despite the inner turmoil that resulted in a revolving cast of characters, the Byrds always used those changes as opportunities to further their musical evolution. "They all brought something new and something defining," says journalist David Fricke, "and it all became part of the Byrds sound. They didn't change the Byrds to the degree that it changed the sound. What they did became the Byrds."

Both segments feature the wide range of music that made The Byrds of the 60s most influential bands, along with comments by its two longest-lasting members: Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman. Writers David Fricke, Anthony DeCurtis, Lenny Kaye and Byrds historian Sid Griffin are also interviewed.

The Byrds (part 2): Farther Along

From Joyride Media | Part of the The Byrds: There is a Season / Farther Along series | 59:05

The Second of two one-hour documentaries on The Byrds, covering 1968 to 1972: the groundbreaking country-rock years.

Unissued_small The second of two one-hour documentaries on The Byrds, the continuously groundbreaking band who bridged the gaps between The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, the Beach Boys, the Los Angeles psychedelic underground and classic country. Each hour is hosted by singer-songwriter Laura Cantrell, and covers a distinct period of their prolific history that can either be aired as one two-part series, or as your choice of two insightful one-hour programs. FARTHER ALONG picks up the story in 1968 and details how the Byrds' legendary Act I was followed by one of rock history's most fascinating second acts. Despite their lower record sales, the Byrds' later incarnations alternately defined and re-defined "country-rock," thanks to the influential contributions by folks like Gram Parsons and guitarist Clarence White. As with the first segment, FARTHER ALONG feature the wide range of music that made The Byrds of the 60s most influential bands, along with comments by its two longest-lasting members: Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman. Writers David Fricke, Anthony DeCurtis, Lenny Kaye and Byrds historian Sid Griffin are also interviewed. Instead of being directed by the singular vision of one leader, The Byrds were consistently led by everybody's contributions - from their original five members to the musicians involved with their later years. "They all brought something new and something defining," says journalist David Fricke, "and it all became part of the Byrds sound. They didn?t change the Byrds to the degree that it changed the sound. What they did became the Byrds." Broadcast Window: Begins late September 2006, available for all USA radio broadcasters at no cost. 9/30 update: In addition to the 0:59 version posted on the audio page, there is also a 0:54 "news-hole" show in two parts - a 1:00 billboard and the 53:00 program.

U2: Achtung Baby

From Joyride Media | 59:00

Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr look back on the year they almost broke up but decided put out a little album called "Achtung Baby" instead.

Achtung_small It’s not easy for any successful band to re-invent themselves. In the early 1990s, U2 learned this the hard way, when their attempts to follow up the anthemic rock of The Joshua Tree and the blues-tinged Rattle & Hum with something totally different.  The process nearly broke up the band, but also took them where they needed to be to reconstruct the band piece by piece, and create music like they've never made before.  "What we did," says U2 front-man Bono,  "was we broke up that band and formed another one, but with the same people…I think we all recognize that making Achtung Baby was the reason we’re still here now."

In this one-hour special, comments by all four U2 members (Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr) tell the story of their November 1991 release, Achtung Baby,  its songs like "Mysterious Ways," "One," "Even Better than the Real Thing" and the subsequent tours that redefined both how U2 would be perceived by the world and themselves.  These rare, insightful interviews are provided by filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (It Might Get Loud, An Inconvenient Truth), from the footage of his acclaimed 2011 documentary, U2 From the Sky Down.

Music heard throughout the program include the classic album tracks and rare or previously unreleased outtakes and covers compiled for the Achtung Baby: Deluxe Edition.  Detailed cue sheet, online report form and other updates are online at http://radiosho.ws/u2

SLY & THE FAMILY STONE: FAMILY AFFAIR

From Joyride Media | Part of the Black History Month Specials series | 59:05

One-hour music intensive radio documentary about Sly & the Family Stone, their music, their turbulent history, and the indelible marks they left behind.

Slyblinglogo_small SLY & THE FAMILY STONE: FAMILY AFFAIR. One-hour music intensive radio documentary about Sly & the Family Stone, their music, their turbulent history, and the indelible marks they left behind. Seven musicians walked on the stage, some were black, some white, some were men, some women, and all of them were dressed in bright, colorful outfits.

That was Sly and the Family Stone, and for seven wild years (1967-1974), they left a mark on music and culture that continues to inspire countless musicians - both black and white. Members changed, times got rough, but Sly and the Family Stone's sound and message of love and unity still speaks to the world today.

FAMILY AFFAIR is hosted by Ben Fong-Torres, and includes a wide range of Sly & the Family Stone tracks - from the big hits ("Dance to the Music," Everyday People," and others) to deep cuts from all their albums. Some songs accentuate the points made by the many interview subjects, others speak for themselves. All of them stand up as examples of Sly Stone's "watershed point in the development of rhythm and blues," as detailed by biographer and journalist Joel Selvin.

Band members Rose Stone, Larry Graham, Greg Errico and Andy Newmark provide rarely-heard, first-hand accounts of the zeniths and nadirs of Sly Stone's universe, taking us from their family roots to their mainstream success to later sessions "surrounded by really crazy people...out there in the twilight zone."

Musicians Isaac Hayes and Chuck D, however, break down how music from all those episodes influenced Sly's contemporaries as well as future generations of musicians.
