Review of Fired! (deleted)

A great production that made me laugh out loud on more than one occasion. I would have preferred less of an emphasis on being fired from acting gigs, and more examples of being fired from other odd jobs. However, I understand the reasoning behind that direction - after all, the majority of jobs taken overall by LATW cast members are likely to be for acting. The diverse range of voices makes for a 59 minute program that flies by. An excellent piece of showcase comedy for weekend afternoons or evenings.

Review of Pop Vultures #15: Crunk & Radio Disney (deleted)

When I first started listening to this episode, the teenage filler term "like" popped out like a sore thumb. As someone considered a pedant by her acquaintances, I thought I wouldn't be able to stand listening to a program peppered with such frequent use of the word. However, I kept listening - and my patience was well rewarded. The hosts wear their youth so well (and it's a refreshing sound), that the word "like" becomes less of a concern as the content begins to shine. 'Pop Vultures' could be likened to a condensed version of CBC's 'Definitely Not The Opera,' with a distinct focus on more specific topics. The show is certainly accessible to a teenage crowd - edgier than Radio Disney, friendlier than the local shock jockey. Good research skills are evident, as pop history and etymology are discussed. Excellent production. Radio stations looking to hook more listeners in the high school student demographic would be wise to consider picking up 'Pop Vultures.'

Review of Chess Gals

As a female who enjoys playing a good game of chess, I was particularly captivated by this piece. Interesting stories within the piece are used to help give a deeper look at the topic (as well as a very human tone). The use of the background noise at a chess tournament adds another layer of depth. Like the rest of Braider's work, this piece has excellent production quality.

Review of PowerPoint in Schools

A well-produced piece on an interesting, seldom covered issue. A varied soundscape is produced without the use of music, keeping the sound clean and listener attention on the topic at hand. This is a nice companion to Braider's other pieces on the ubiquitous Microsoft program.

Review of Radio Drama in VA107

I like the concept of this radio drama. The stereo effect is nice (it's unfortunate that too many people listen to radio in mono). However, sometimes the silences in this piece are quite long for radio. The overlapping of voices is a bit distracting, and makes this piece a little less accessible. While I didn't feel entirely convinced by the voice talent, I do feel the script has merit. There is some strong storytelling in the writing. A re-recording with some improvements in production and pacing would do this piece justice.

Review of Mixtape #6

This edition of Mixtape is much more accessible to listeners than most experimental radio pieces. While the pacing and production quality could use some polish, the tone works well throughout. A distinctly human story is being told in the piece, one which draws the listener in.

I would likely make a point of listening to Mixtape on a regular basis, were it broadcast on a local radio station.
